Opening reception: Saturday January 25 from 6-9 PM

The Cirkit of Mythos gears up for another round of over the top art mayhem with their new exhibition, Noble Savages at MFA Gallery.

An early play on the concept of the outsider, untainted by civilization and living under his own inner rule, the term ‘noble savage’ emerged in the 19th century as an expression of naïveté used to describe the native and exotic ‘other’ during the periods of colonial expansion. Winking at the inappropriate nature and archaic language that brought forth such a term, the boys make playful mockery of it by embracing their stance as artists who live in a 21st century technologically advanced age, yet willfully standing apart and gleefully wallowing in their own iconoclasm.

The Cirkit of Mythos is led by Arlington mid-cities based founding member Omar Hernandez, whose graphic pop constructions utilize contemporary digital techniques, even as they point out the apocalyptic direction of such technologies, and leaving subtle hints of a primeval perfection that might yet re-emerge.

Joining him from the west side, Ft. Worth, comes Eddy Rawlinson, generating iconic paintings that glorify the biker and rebel outsider, rendered in super saturated colors reminiscent of psychedelic poster art.

Oak Cliff artist and gallery owner ‘Big’ Steve Cruz provides comic relief with his hand-painted sequential narratives of deities and lovers caught in a never-ending series of antics depicting ‘love gone wrong’, lending belly laughs and pathos to the romantic image of the exoticism.

And newest recruit, Dallas-based Randall Garrett debuts a series of new photo works based on performance characters, presenting alternately deadpan and humorous archetypes of the self, as dredged up from the shadowy depths of the unconscious.

In conjunction with the opening at MFA Gallery, Wordspace will feature a spoken word set by Randall Garrett, beginning at 8 pm, accompanied by the eclectic sounds of the Inferno Texino combo, fronted by Andy Don Emmons and Clay Stinnett, and featuring their current foray into dirty swamp blues. Expect costumes, masks, and other hi-jinx to ensue.

Opening reception: Saturday, Feb. 23 from 6-9 PM

Cirkit of Mythos presents “Texploitation II” featuring new work by Steve Cruz, Omar Hernandez, Eddy Rawlinson and Ryder Richards. This show opens Saturday February 23 with a reception for the artists from 6-9pm and will run till March 30. Hell yeah this is a Texass Art Show with real “ART” and chicks and sex and blood and guts and glory and bar-b-que and more sex. None of this aesthetic hand wringing and whining and hipster doodads, yall can shove that coy, cute and conceptual. Hell we aint anti-intelluctual, look we’re just exposing the dialectic of hypocrisy entrenched in stereotype. We’re Texas artists focused on personal mythology as environmentally determined, taking on the icons of the West and moderm masculinity as politically charged and contentious while hearlding a warning of extremity and romanticized notions of power. Damn straight!

Steve Cruz is also owner operator of Mighty Fine Arts Gallery, Omar Hernandez is a Professor of Art at El Centro College, Eddy Rawlinson moonlights as Dean of Arts and Sciences at El Centro College, and Ryder Richards is currently a Roswell Artist in Residence Fellow.

We can’t help it. Living in Texas makes us better than you. Just look at the art, y’all. We deal with real issues, like chicks, engines, guns, and sex. None of this political panty-waist, hand-wringing and whining about ourselves or crying about the earth or any of that hippy shit. We make work about real stuff. Like how men jump in head first breaking shit and fuck anything, and how lame it is that people get all caught up in power when all you need is a warm hole to holster your gun and some wind in your hair.

Or not…

Carne-Val

Cirkit of Mythos presents “Carne-val” at the
Altered State Fair” (presented by MFA Gallery)
Oct 15, 7-11 PM @ the Kessler Theatre, Dallas, TX

Cirkit of Mythos is a group of Dallas/Fort Worth artists. Group members active in “Carne-val” include Omar Hernandez, Eddy Rawlinson, Jason Reynaga, and Ryder Richards. For this exhibit (Altered State Fair) the group has developed “Carne-val,” a one-night-only performance playing with stereotypes and loss of dignity as a cultural ritual.

— Carne-val Statement —

Carnivals, sideshows, attractions, and bizarre decadence. You must be paying for the experience, because we all know cotton candy is 90% air and you threw up that funnel cake after a ride on the Whirligig. Oh, and don’t forget that $45 stuffed animal proving you can throw a baseball. Might want to throw it in the wash, there’s still a bit of funnel cake on it.

In the tradition of the classic Carney trickery and over-the-top cheesiness of the state fair with their shameless pitch to sale out kitsch, Cirkit of Mythos offers the American classic machine fetish: a beautiful, scantly clad girl next to a guy on a motorcycle.
